CHAPTER 27 - The Prince

Megan shook her head; it couldn't be him. He must be the man's great, great however many times removed grandfather. He had the same name, but it couldn't be the same man . . . could it?

She stared as he and Hugh walked toward her and the boys.

After introducing the other four, Hugh stopped in front of her.

"And this is Mistress Megan."

Dafydd bowed deeply. "A pleasure my lady."

Megan tried to recall what the man back at her gran's had sounded like; the voices seemed similar, but she couldn't be sure.

"Hugh tells me that Gruffydd ap Tudur tasked you with finding me. That you might have information of import to the prince?"

Megan had no idea what he was talking about. In any case, her mind was racing. In a weird way it made some sense. The Dafydd in her gran's front room had given her the pendant, and it was central to what had happened to her. If it was the same man though, why had he acted as if he’d never met her before. She decided it couldn’t be him.

"I believe we are taking over the Magistrate's house for a council of war; the two of you should join us," Dafydd said. Hugh grabbed Megan’s hand and pulled her in the direction of Dafydd as he strode away.

She called over her shoulder to the others. "See you back at 'The Raven'." Ifor nodded; he looked miffed they were going to meet Prince Madog without him.

It was standing room only in the house. Hugh and Megan followed Dafydd as he cleared a path through the masses.

Sitting at the head of a long table, Prince Madog called him forward.

"And whom do we have here, Dafydd?"

"This is Hugh, he was sent to us by Gruffydd ap Tudur."

Prince Madog smiled. "If a loyal old servant such as Gruffydd sent him, then it must be a matter of some import. Tell me young man, from where do you hail?"

Hugh hesitated, not sure if he should reveal the truth.

"Does the cat have his tongue Dafydd?"

"I reside in Flint Castle," Hugh blurted out.

Before the prince could reply, a tall, gangly man with red hair jumped to his feet.

"A royal castle? He is a spy surely."

Prince Madog smiled. "Well Bleddyn, by admitting it, he would be a pretty poor spy indeed."

Several of the man seated near the prince chortled.

"Aside from providing us with information about the castle when the time comes to attack it, I am curious as to why Gruffydd sent you to us at this particular juncture."

Hugh turned to Megan and waved her forward.

"And who is this young lad?" Madog asked.

"Her name is Megan," Hugh replied.

The prince studied her more closely. "Ah, indeed, my apologies young lady, your manner of dress and hair befuddled me for a moment. Forgive me, but I am still at a loss why you are here."

Hugh took a big breath. "Her name is Megan, but she has identical features to the Lady Mary, daughter of King Edward."

The red-haired man named Bleddyn jumped up once more.
